HIV Result Reporting

Results for HIV-1 Antibody EIA testing and any subsequent required confirmatory testing will be entered into the LIS. Hospital Inpatient test results will be directly interfaced into the respective hospital’s HIS. Outpatient and Outreach patient results will be forwarded to the ordering physician by printed report with all other laboratory results. All HIV testing reported into the LIS will be handled as "Sensitive" tests and may be accessed only by those individuals that have the appropriate security level.

1. Expedited HIV-1 Ab (HIVP) will be entered into the LIS as follows:

a. Results that are repeatedly non-reactive will be resulted in the LIS as NEGATIVE.

b. Results that are repeatedly reactive will be reported in the LIS as POSITIVE. Confirmatory Western Blot testing will be ordered in the LIS and patient specimen will be sent to the reference laboratory for confirmatory testing. All POSITIVE results will be called to the ordering floor/unit.

2. Routine HIV-1 Ab Screening (HIV) will be entered into the LIS as follows:

a. Results that are repeatedly non-reactive will be resulted in the LIS as NEGATIVE

b. Results that are repeatedly reactive will NOT be entered into the LIS until results of the required confirmatory Western Blot testing are received from the reference laboratory. Once confirmatory testing results are received, the HIV-1 Antibody screening test will be resulted in the LIS as POSITIVE accompanied by the confirmatory Western Blot results from the reference laboratory.
